By Nitin Kalra For Anaida, life's been hip-hop. She spent her childhood in different countries, thanks to the business of her dad. This half-Greek, half-Persian girl found a permanent home in amchi Mumbai and says she is proud of it. And she has reason to be. India, and especially Mumbai, has given her the success that she deserved.
And then followed a series of hits, beginning with 'Love Today Hai Nahin Asaan', which was followed by an English single 'Fever'. Now her identity as a dancer in both Western and Indian styles was established. In 1996, Anaida launched the album 'Nazuk Nazuk', whose two videos, 'Oova Oova' and 'Hoo Halla Hoo', had a huge appeal, the latter being India's first animated video. Then she featured in the song 'Hakuna Matata' with Baba Sehgal for the animated Disney movie 'The Lion King'. 1996 saw Anaida's first Arabic album out - 'Mailu Mailu'. "I was surprised that people in India received the album so well. We had actually not made the album for Indian audiences, but it was great to know it did well here too." The following year Anaida's single 'Hum Sab Ek Hain' in the commemorative album 'Ekta' was launched, whose video featured Sanjay Dutt and Salman Khan. Anaida was in the news recently, for the song 'Quest' in Kaizad Gustad's Bombay Boys. "Quest was something I wanted to do for myself. Having been in the industry almost five years now, I thought I should do a song to please me rather than anyone else. That's how Quest came about, and I am happy it has done tremendously well on the charts," says Anaida who has proved her range and versatility with this song.
The album has a lot of Indian folk music, something very unusual for Anaida. "I have always been a very traditional person. I enjoy traditional music especially the flute. Nowadays Indians are adopting more western music. But we seem to have forgotten that the essence of music lies in our folk and classical music. Through this album, I have tried to return to the folk styles of India." The album is a collection of eight tracks, including the chartbuster video 'Oonchi Neechi'. Music is by Ira Roshan and lyrics by Maya Govind. "This album is an effort that I am proud of. I have put my heart into it, although I have recorded it at a time when I was sad, upset, confused and sick. It brings out the sensitive Anaida and I feel that people will like it." We hope so too, Anaida! |
